what is searxng instances?
searxng is open-source metasearch software: a self-hostable front-end that queries google, bing and other engines, then strips out the tracking and profiling before returning results. dozens of volunteers run public instances, and the software has onion support built in - instances that operate one advertise it via the onion-location header tor browser understands.
the instances tracked here are among the established ones, verified two ways: their own servers advertise these exact onions in http headers, and the searxng project's official instance monitor at searx.space lists them with matching addresses. instances update frequently and are graded publicly.
because each instance is run by a different volunteer, treat them as convenient doors rather than institutions. our checker watches the addresses; if one goes quiet, the badge says so.
before you trust any of this
- .onion addresses are long on purpose. one wrong letter = someone else's server.
- if a service matters to you, cross-check its address against its own clearnet site or PGP-signed announcements.
- a green badge here means "reachable", never "trustworthy". we report reachability only.
