what is eff?

the electronic frontier foundation is the longest-running digital-rights nonprofit in the united states - litigation, advocacy and reference material on privacy, free expression and cryptography since 1990. its surveillance self-defense guides are among the most-used practical privacy resources anywhere, including in censored regions.

eff announced its onion services officially in april 2023: the main site, certbot (its ubiquitous tls certificate tool) and the surveillance self-defense portal each run as their own onion. reading up on how to protect yourself without an observer seeing that you are reading up on it is precisely the use case.

worth knowing: eff no longer actively promotes the onions (the dedicated landing page is gone), but the addresses remain official and are still listed on the tor project's community index - all three are tracked and re-checked here.

before you trust any of this
