what is airvpn?
airvpn, running since about 2010, describes itself as operated by activists and hacktivists in defense of net neutrality - a personality-driven, engineering-first provider that accepts bitcoin and has courted the tor community for over a decade.
unusually, the onion advertisement covers both the public site and the logged-in client area: airvpn serves the standard onion-location header on its entry pages, so the tor browser offers the switch automatically even where it matters most - account management.
the address tracked here is the header-advertised one, straight from their own servers.
before you trust any of this
- .onion addresses are long on purpose. one wrong letter = someone else's server.
- if a service matters to you, cross-check its address against its own clearnet site or PGP-signed announcements.
- a green badge here means "reachable", never "trustworthy". we report reachability only.
