what is cia's official onion?
yes, the central intelligence agency runs an official tor site. launched in 2019, the onion mirror of cia.gov exists primarily so that sources inside restrictive jurisdictions can reach the agency's contact channels safely - a tacit acknowledgment that the people the agency wants to hear from often have good reasons to hide their network traffic.
the mirror carries the agency's public face: the world factbook, historical document releases, careers information and instructions for reaching the agency securely. it is served by the same infrastructure as the clearnet site and announced through official channels, so the usual verification rules apply - match the address against cia.gov before using it.
a spy agency running an onion service remains one of the tor network's ironies. operationally it behaves like any other entry here: our checker probes the address over tor on schedule, and the badge plus uptime history below report whether it is currently answering.
before you trust any of this
- .onion addresses are long on purpose. one wrong letter = someone else's server.
- if a service matters to you, cross-check its address against its own clearnet site or PGP-signed announcements.
- a green badge here means "reachable", never "trustworthy". we report reachability only.
