what is alphabay?
alphabay is the most storied name in the market category: founded in 2014, it grew into the largest market the tor network had seen - two hundred thousand users, six-figure weekly turnover, escrow and a vendor reputation system that became the model for everything after it. in july 2017 an international sting branded operation bayonet seized it, and its founder died in thai custody weeks later. the scene's folklore has never really moved on.
the surprise came in 2021, when desanke - an admin of the original site - relaunched alphabay on a fresh v3 address, published through pgp-signed announcements and carried since by the verification directories. the address tracked here (alphabay5gth...) is that official one; anything else using the brand is a lookalike, and alphabay lookalikes are among the oldest phishing traps on the network.
